Bestselling author James Patterson played Santa Claus this week by giving away $250,000 to staff members at independent bookstores across the country. This latest installment of his multimillion-dollar largess involved awarding grants of $1,000 to $5,000 to spread the joy of reading. Some 87 booksellers got the good news on Dec. 15.
